Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Program

Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Program

What is the Medicare therapeutic shoe program?
The Medicare Therapeutic shoe program was designed to provide diabetic patients who qualify and are on Medicare with one pair of shoes and three pair of accommodative insoles annually. The purpose is to decrease the risk of diabetic foot complications.

What is a diabetic shoe?
A diabetic shoe features more interior depth than a normal shoe, allowing for a 3/16" insert. The shoes must be made from leather or a material of equal quality and have some form of shoe closure. It also must be made available in full and half sizes, and in 3 widths.

Will you have my size available?
We have shoes ranging in size from a women's size 5 narrow to a men's size 16 9E. It is rare for a patient to be unable to find a shoe that fits.

How do I know if I qualify for the Medicare therapeutic shoe program? You will receive a complete diabetic foot evaluation when you are seen by the doctor in the office, and at that time a determination will be made whether you qualify for the program. We have found that a large percentage of our diabetic patients do indeed qualify for shoes.

What if the shoes don't fit, or if I don't like them for any reason?
We recommend that patients wear the shoes inside for the first few days to make sure the fit is satisfactory. If the shoes have not been worn outside, they may be returned for up to 30 days after the date they were dispensed.

Are the shoes ugly?
Definitely not! We have a very wide variety of styles and colors to choose from. Below are listed the shoes we carry. We also encourage you to visit www.drcomfortshoes.com to see some of the types of shoes available from our office.
