The most common cause of heel pain is a condition called plantar fasciitis. This is caused by excessive tension of the band (plantar fascia) which is on the bottom of the foot that supports the arch. When this happens, this band becomes inflamed, and is a cause of heel pain. When you go to bed at night, this band or ligament tightens as you sleep. When you stand up in the morning, it stretches out again, and you experience pain. Often, the pain lessons after a period of time, only to gradually worsen as the day progresses. Treatment for plantar fasciitis is centered on first relieving the forces that are causing the excessive tension on the plantar fascia, and second, reducing the inflammation that is causing pain.
